Meeting Princess
Zelda – From the Forest to the Castle
Hyrule Field
Allies here include:
Saria:
You
encounter her before you can leave Kokiri Forest. She will give you
a Fairy Ocarina so you will remember her. You will see her again
so do not worry.
Owl:This
mysterious bird shows up every so often to give you invaluable advice.
Follow the dirt road behind him to reach Hyrule Castle. The world
map you carry works like a Dungeon Map and Compass. After you explore
a new area, it is added to your map. Flashing dots indicate where
you should go. You can also spot him far to the west, at the entrance
to Gerudo Valley. He advises you not to go in, as the Gerudo have
no love of children.
Foes here include:
Mido:
He obviously blames you for the Deku Tree’s death. Breathe easy after
he picks on you, be-cause you won’t see him again for quite some time.
Stalchildren:These
skeletons rise from the ground right after sunset. Two slashes beats
one. Some are beheaded after one hit, but others aren’t. They
come in small and large varieties.
Peahats:
These giant plants are found in many portions of Hyrule Field. If
you get near one, it will stir and rise into the air. Avoid the spiked
roots. Six hits to the soft area in the center of the roots will
kill one.
Peahat
Larvae: These small plants are the younger Peahats. They
appear if you run from a big one by day or attack a big one by night.
Slash once and a Peahat Larva will go reeling into the ground.
Items here include:
Hearts
Rupees
Deku
Seeds
Fairy
Ocarina: Saria gives you this as a token of your friendship.
You can learn up to twelve songs for it. You need it now, so you
should definitely accept.
Important locations here
include:
Wood Bridge: This
place, located in the western Lost Woods, connects Kokiri Forest to Hyrule
Field. Saria is waiting for you here.
Woody Path: This
path goes from the Wood Bridge to Peahat Country. The Owl is waiting
nearby.
Peahat Country:
This
woody region in southeast Hyrule Field is infested with Peahats.
If you had some explosives, you could blow up the rocks they’re guarding.
Lake Hylia Gate:
These
four pillars guard the way south to Lake Hylia. The Owl is waiting
here later on to explain the lake. On the side of the southwest pillar
is a ladder that lets you reach the lake.
Dry Area: This
ledge in western Hyrule Field leads toward Gerudo Valley. The Peahat
there dis-courages all travelers from going there. Besides, the Owl
is here to warn against it.
Lon-Lon Ranch:
This ranch, the only one in all Hyrule, is very famous. The racing
horses bred there are among the fastest in all Hyrule. You can also
buy nutritious Lon-Lon Milk from Talon, the owner. He and his daughter
Malon are away on business in Hyrule Castle Town.
Brook: This
small stream flows west out of Hyrule Castle Town. A Peahat guards
the other side.
Stream: This
River flows from Zora’s River before dividing in two. One half goes
south to a pond, while the other heads north, to the Stone Bridge and Drawbridge
Area.
Stone Bridge:
This Bridge connects Hyrule Field to Kakariko Village. The staircase
across the way leads to Kakariko Village.
Drawbridge Area:
This
is the entrance to Hyrule Castle Town. The Drawbridge itself lowers
at dawn and rises at sunset.
Area strategies include:
You will have to talk to Mido again when you
reach the end of the path. When he moves off, blaming you for the
death of the Deku Tree, you are free to move. You should head straight
for the log tunnel opposite, which leads you directly to Hyrule Field.
Saria, who has a gift, stops you on the bridge in the Lost Woods.
You pocket her Fairy Ocarina and then run onward to Hyrule Field.
After the introductory scene, you can run
down a path lined with dead trees. When you reach the end of the
trail, you meet up with the Owl, the recurring advice bird. He tells
you here about the map and the path to the castle, which is the dirt path
right behind him. You should run along the path using your map to
the north-central path. If you can’t reach the drawbridge in time,
it shuts and you have to fend off the rag-clad Stalchildren until the sun
rises. When you get the chance, you can head in to Hyrule Castle
Town, the biggest city of the country.
Hyrule Field serves as the junction between
the major landmarks of the kingdom. You have already been to Kokiri
Forest, so no further description is appropriate. The Lost Woods,
though, are said to be full of monsters of every description. The
wall in the center of the field is the boundaries of Lon-Lon Ranch, the
only ranch in Hyrule. The ranch is very famous for its exquisite
milk and its ex-tremely fast horses. You might even be able to find
a few Gold Skulltulas in the ranch, if you look hard.
To the south of Hyrule Field is Lake Hylia.
This inland sea, coupled with Zora’s River to the east, is a good source
of fresh water and tasty fish. The Zoras are the guardians of the
water, and slightly wary of strangers in their domains. In fact,
you will have to visit Princess Zelda and get royal permission to even
attempt that. Of course, the Zoras take all fish and amphibian jokes
personally, so comedy is discouraged.
The western road out of the field leads you
to Gerudo Valley. This steep canyon and the de-sert beyond are guarded
by the all-female Gerudo Thieves. Remember that the evil man of your
dream came from the desert, and he controls the Gerudo. His flunkies
are likely to be downright hos-tile to you, so entry is not advised at
this point. Only experienced adventurers should try to break their
impenetrable barriers.
Northeast Hyrule is home to the developing
town of Kakariko Village and the attendant graveyard. The ghosts
can be quite a nuisance, so you should not head there presently.
You will need royal permission to climb Death Mountain, just north of Kakariko
Village. This active volcano is very rocky and prone to avalanches,
so a stronger shield is recommended. You will visit each of these
areas eventually, so hold your horses and head, for now, into Hyrule Castle
Town.
Hyrule Castle Town
Allies here include:
Malon:
This cute, red-haired girl helps run Lon-Lon Ranch. Her dad,
Talon, left for the castle to deliver Lon-Lon Milk, but hasn’t come back
yet. You should help her out on your way to see the Prin-cess.
She’s by the fountain in the center of the Market.
Mamamu
Yan: This lady likes her gray terrier, Richard. She loses
it at night. If you return Richard to her, she’ll give you Heart
Piece 1.
Potion
Guy: This man runs the Potion Shop. You may not use most
of his excellent wares without a Bottle.
Bazaar
Owner: This large fellow owns the Bazaar. Even though
his items don’t need a Bottle, you can’t use most of them without certain
other requirements.
Bearded Man: This man loves his long, flowing beard.
He hangs out near the Bazaar by day. The man with the shabby-looking
beard he saw delivering boxes to the castle is Talon.
Old
Man: This geezer, found outside the Bombchu Bowling Alley, knows
a lot. The Sheikah people are known as the shadows of the Hylians.
Though they have vanished, one supposedly lives at Hy-rule Castle.
Running
Man: This weird guy is running all over the place. He
never has time for anything but de-livery jobs.
Guards:
These soldiers welcome you to Hyrule Castle Town. The one
inside the Rupee House is ex-tremely bored. At night, you are advised
to stay inside until morning.
Laughing
Duo: These two men laugh whenever they can. The one in
the blue shirt tried to get a peek at Princess Zelda but was caught.
As a result, security all over the area has been tightened.
Foes here include:
Gold
Skulltula: There is one inside a crate in the Rupee House.
Items here include:
Hearts
Rupees
Deku Seeds
Skull Token
Deku
Nuts: Each set of 5 that you buy at the Bazaar or Potion Shop
costs R15.
Arrows:
These bullets are useless without a Bow and Quiver. They are much
stronger than Deku Seeds. At the Bazaar, 10 cost R20, 30 cost R60,
and 50 cost R90.
Bombs:
These explosives are the “special crop” of the Goron race that lives
on Death Mountain. You can’t get them until you beat the next dungeon.
Each set of 5 costs R35.
Hylian
Shield: This iron shield standard
to Hylian soldiers is heavy and flame-resistant. This makes it a
must to climb Death Mountain. You can get this item discounted from
R80 (or even free) later on. There is rumored to be a monster that
eats Hylian shields. It may be bought at the Bazaar.
Bottle
Bug: This insect forces Gold Skulltula up from nests under small
mounds of soil, like the one near the Kokiri Shop. One Bottle Bug
costs R50 and needs a Bottle for storage.
Blue
Fire: This refreshing flame melts rare, red ice. Buy it
at the Potion Shop for R300 if you have a Bottle to store it. It
is found for free in some dungeon areas.
Fairy
Spirit: If you are mortally wounded and have one stored in a
Bottle, it will totally revive you. The cost is a mere R50.
Poe: Someone lucky caught this ghost spirit. Some people
might want such things. Its cost is R50. If you drink it, one
Heart will be recovered. A Bottle is required for storage.
Green
Potion: This potion restores Magic power to the drinker.
It costs R30 and needs a Bottle for storage. You won’t need it for
a while.
Red
Potion: This potion completely refills your Health Meter when
drunk. Each dose costs R30 and needs a Bottle for storage.
Do not buy Potions unless you absolutely must because Fairy Spirits are
better. The ultimate potion that restores both is available later
on.
Heart
Piece 1: Get this by returning Richard to the Mamamu Yan.
Collect four Heart Pieces for an-other Heart Container. You need
to visit Kakariko Village before you can get the other two Heart Pieces
here. There are 36 in all, hidden far and wide.
Important locations here
include:
Rupee House: This
building just off the drawbridge is full of money in pots. A Gold
Skulltula is hid-ing in a crate opposite the door. You can fill your
wallet after three visits here at this point.
Bazaar: This
building south of the Potion Shop is a good source of Arrows, Bombs, Hylian
Shields, and Deku Nuts. The Bearded Man hangs out near here.
Vendor Stalls:
There are two of these stalls, one near the Bazaar, and the other across
from it. Rich-ard hangs out near the one at the Bazaar at night.
Potion Shop: Many
items here need Bottles, but the Deku Nuts don’t.
Temple of Time:
This building northeast of the Potion Shop has a strange aura about
it. Come back later.
Other important locations
here include:
Woman’s House: This
room in the alleyways of the town is Mamamu Yan’s home. Heart Piece
1 appears here when you retrieve Richard.
North Gate: This
road leads directly to Hyrule Castle.
Area strategies include:
You enter the town next to a guard, who welcomes you to the prosperous
city. In the door near you, there are several pots, a few crates,
and another guard. He encourages you to break the pots to relieve
stress, and it will earn you several Rupees. You can find a fourth
Gold Skulltula in the crates, if you bash them all. You can then
head north along the cobblestone street into the market-place, the main
part of the city.
There are several people you must talk to in the Market, a flashing
dot on the map. Most im-portant among them is Malon, the daughter
of Talon, of Lon-Lon Ranch. You should also converse with the bent
old man in blue robes and the bearded man. If you need any supplies,
you can buy them at the Bazaar or Potion Shop, or just find them scattered
around. The church-like building up the stairs is a very strange
building called the Temple of Time. You will not need to go here
for a while, as you need the Royal Family’s help to unlock its secrets.
If you need to, you can buy some stuff from the Bazaar and Potion
Shop, but you should not need to. Checking the bushes will help,
as will talking to people. You must talk to Malon here to get inside
Hyrule Castle, so you must do that. You should get Heart Piece 1
before you head north, and also check out the closed-up shops. You
can try to complete the Treasure Chest mini-game, but that is pure luck,
and Link is not Irish! In any case, you will need to head up to Hyrule
Castle sooner or later. Princess Zelda is waiting, and she will be
most pleased to see you, but the evil man will not, unfortunately…
Hyrule Castle and
Environs
Allies here include:
Owl: He warns you here not to get caught by the Guards if
you want to see Princess Zelda. Time flows normally here, but stands
still in Lon-Lon Ranch, towns, or dungeons.
Malon:
If you agree to find her dad, she’ll give you a Weird Egg that hatches
into a Chicken later on.
Talon:
He introduces himself once you wake him. He fell asleep on
a delivery run to the castle. He’ll run away so he can start cheering
Malon up.
Princess
Zelda: She dreamt that someone from the forest would save Hyrule.
Your name sounds strangely familiar. She has been spying on Ganondorf,
a Gerudo who looks just like the figure in your dream. Her father
trusts Ganondorf and not her dream. She will keep the Ocarina of
Time while you get the other Spiritual Stones. Her Letter lets you
reach the next dungeon.
Impa:
This Sheikah is Princess Zelda’s bodyguard. Your courage is worthy
of her praise. She will teach you Zelda’s Lullaby.
Foes here include:
Gold
Skulltula: One is hiding in the Tree where the Owl is perched.
Guards:
If these soldiers spot you, they’ll throw you out of the Gardens (early)
or the Courtyard (later on). Avoid them at all costs.
Ganondorf:
He is the king of the Gerudos from the far western desert of Hyrule.
His evil eyes give away his intentions. He pretends to serve Zelda’s
father, but really desires the Triforce so he can rule the world.
As you may have guessed, he is the evil man the Deku Tree warned you about.
Items here include:
Rupees
Hearts
Deku Seeds
Skull Token
Weird
Egg: When Malon appears, she will
give you this. It hatches into a Chicken the day after you get it.
Chicken:
This bird will wake up Talon. It hatches from the Weird Egg the day
after you get it from Malon.
Zelda’s
Letter: This item is a gift from Princess Zelda. Show
it to the Guard in Kakariko Village and you may attempt to scale Death
Mountain.
Important locations here
include:
Tree: The Owl
is perched here. Bash it when he leaves to find the Gold Skulltula.
Vines: Malon
appears here by night. Climb up and the ledge leads towards to the
top of the Arch.
Arch: Jump from
the top to reach the road below. The Guard at its base will let you
through for R10, but don’t take the offer.
Dead End: A
wall and a brown boulder block this part of the road. Come back with
Bombs for a surprise.
Gardens: This
peaceful area is full of Guards, trees, and flowers. At the corner
is the Climbing Wall.
Climbing Wall: This
wall is rough enough to climb up. You can sneak past the Drawbridge
via the Moat.
Moat: This running
water surrounds the castle itself. It will get you past the Drawbridge
to the Tree.
Drawbridge:
This wooden bridge is always raised. It is the main entrance to the
castle.
Tree: This plant
marks the place where you should leave the Moat. It sounds hollow
nearby.
Secret Entrance:
Talon is sleeping on the platform near this small tunnel. Once
he leaves, stack the crates of milk so you can get into the Courtyards.
Courtyards: These
grassy parks are watched over by speedy Guards. Sneak by to reach
the Inner Sanctum.
Inner Sanctum: This
round park is where you will find Princess Zelda. Impa appears by
the arch once you have the Letter. The window looks in on the throne
room.
A new Ocarina song:
Zelda’s Lullaby: Impa teaches this tune to
you. It is C-left, C-up, C-right, C-left, C-up, C-right. You need it
to reach several places later on. The melody is ancient and was a lullaby
for the infant Princess Zelda. It proves your connection with the Royal
Family.
Area strategies include:
When you arrive, you can head up the road after
the cinema clip concludes. The Owl again meets you, and he has even
more advice for you. In this area, time flows normally (Six minutes
Earth time = 24 Hyrulian hours). In dungeons, towns, and Lon-Lon
Ranch, time stops moving until you re-enter the outer area. You will
have to avoid the patrolling castle guards if you want to get in to see
Princess Zelda. When the Owl flies off, you can roll into the tree
to drop a Gold Skulltula onto the dirt.
After you do that, you can either get caught
by the guards or wait until sunset near the vines. You do either
of those and you can talk to Malon, who gives you a Weird Egg. With
that, you can climb the vines and then leap over the gates. You must
climb the hill after taking the left fork at the intersection to avoid
the guards. When you race across the gardens, you should head for
the rough surface of the Climbing Wall. Once you reach the top, you
must jump into the moat and let its cur-rent take you onward.
When you reach the tree and the dead-end gate,
climb out, and head toward the sleeping man. When the Chicken hatches
(if it hasn’t already), show it to Talon to wake him up. He will
soon run off, allowing you to maneuver the crates into position.
You can do this by pushing them off the plat-form so that they form a stack
and you hear a strange tone. You must jump over to the secret en-trance
before sunset, or else the guards will catch you.
You emerge into the courtyards, a series of
grassy lawns inside the castle walls. All you have to do is dodge
the guards at every turn until you reach the final portion. When
you have an excep-tionally fast guard, try climbing onto the wooden plank
above him. The last two guards patrol a large rectangular area around
a marble statue. You can dodge them if you have good timing and move
where they can’t see you. When you reach the final chamber, you need
only head through the arch to reach Princess Zelda.
The young monarch stands near the window opposite
the throne room. When you talk to her, say that you have the Spiritual
Stone and that you believe her. The Creation Epic cinema sequence
will further clarify anything you were confused about, but leaves you more
questions. When you spy on Ganondorf, keep in mind that he might
also be able to see you, and figure out you have the Spiri-tual Stone.
Whatever you do, agree to do what Princess Zelda says and the story will
progress quite fine. When you can leave, you will automatically meet
Impa, the white-haired guardian Sheikah of Princess Zelda.
Impa believes the Princess, and was instructed
to teach you a song. Zelda’s Lullaby is the of-ficial melody of the
Royal Family, and you need it. When you have memorized the song,
Impa takes you out of the castle to Hyrule Field, so the guards don’t catch
you. When you look at Death Moun-tain, you might be able to see a
cave near the summit, but maybe not. When Impa vanishes (how does
she do that?), you can head south to Lon-Lon Ranch along the path.
It will help you more if you first enter this area during the day.
Creation Epic, Part 2
The three goddesses hid the Triforce somewhere
in Hyrule. The Triforce grants the wish of whoever touches it.
A hero with the Triforce will lead Hyrule into a golden age of peace and
prosperity. However, a villain with the Triforce will consume the
world with evil. The ancient Sages built the Temple of Time to guard
the Triforce. The Temple of Time is the doorway to the Sacred Realm
where the Triforce rests.
The entrance is sealed with an intricately
carved stone slab called the Door of Time. You need the Spiritual
Stones to open the door. To activate the Stones, you need the Royal
Family’s Oca-rina of Time.
